The history of Lacoste is the story of a tennis legend whose inventions changed the entire sport and revolutionized the clothing industry forever. Born in 1904, René Lacoste wins his first tournament at aged 17 and the French Open for the first time in 1924. Press acclaim for Rene Lacoste's strength and performance quickly follow. Hearing of a bet over an alligator skin suitcase, a journalist nicknames him the "Alligator". Inspired by his nickname, in 1926 Lacoste asks his friend Robert George to design a crocodile, and the now famous logo makes its first appearance embroidered on the blazer of René Lacoste. In 1933 René Lacoste meets André Gillier and together they conceive the Lacoste polo shirt, a revolutionary piece of design. Together they create La Chemise Lacoste. Over the decades that follow Lacoste creates many more innovative designs in both clothing and sports equipment. In 1981 the first Lacoste boutique opens on Avenue Victor Hugo, Paris. Today, Lacoste still creates designs that are an integral part of the brands history, while being perfectly in tune with our times. Lacoste watches truly stand out from the rest.
